With cyber attacks becoming more sophisticated and more evolved bad actors cropping up each day, now is the perfect time to make sure you are following best practices in all of your electronic activities. Being safe online isn’t so different from being safe in the physical world. Luckily, there are several steps that you can take on a daily basis to mitigate risks and stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.
Be Cyber Smart with these 5 tips for online safety
Double your login protection. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds that necessary second check to verify your identity when logging in to one of your accounts. MFAs make it more difficult for password cracking tools to enable attackers to break into accounts.
Use strong passphrases/password manager. This may seem obvious, but using long, complex, and unique passwords is a good way to stop your accounts from being hacked. Use a password manager as an easy, secure way of keeping track and remembering your passwords.
Perform software updates. It’s tempting to ignore updates, but having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system on your devices is one of the best defenses against online threats. So, don’t wait — update.
Keep tabs on your apps. Most connected appliances, toys and devices are supported by a mobile application. Check your app permissions and use the “rule of least privilege” to delete what you don’t need or no longer use. Only download apps from trusted vendors and sources.
Check your settings. Be diligent about double checking your privacy and security settings, and be aware who can access your documents. This extends from Google docs, to Zoom calls, and beyond.
